On Episode 134 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, we discuss the “Batdance” B-side, initially intended for the film but replaced at the last minute. While it has clear literal connections to the Batman scene it was intended for, did Prince sprinkle his spiritual leanings towards the end? I, and my guest for this episode, Angel Monique, believe it’s possible. It’s party time, ya’ll, so get your house in order and fly with us for the episode on “200 Balloons.”
The beat thumps, and the lyrics tell us it’s party time, but is there more than meets the ears here? Is this a case of a song where Prince was juggling a couple of different themes? Primarily, it appears to be a song designed to soundtrack a film scene where the Joker throws a parade and tosses money into the crowd, only to distract them from the poisonous gases he releases from his parade balloons. However, it can also be interpreted to recall a party that might preface the rapture. A rave unto the joy fantastic, possibly? Listen for yourself and see if you agree with us.
The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:
- Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
- Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
- If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics
Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
