On Episode 133 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Prince scholar, author, and #PrinceTwitterThread co-founder, Edgar Kruize and I gush over “Batdance,” the chaotic, sample-heavy, #1 dance/pop hit from the Batman soundtrack. For a song with barely any lyrics, we somehow manage to discuss a lot more. Get the funk up!

“Hey Duckie, let’s stick the 7-inch into the computer.”
Prince regains the top spot on the pop charts after a three-year absence by creating a danceable mash-up of samples, sounds, and styles. The sheer amount of creativity present for this unlikely smash hit is astounding. He calls back to songs from the album (“Electric Chair,” “The Future”), B-sides (“200 Balloons”), and unreleased tracks (“House In Order,” “We Got the Power”) along with enough movie samples to make your head spin trying to figure out which scene he pulled them from. As Kim Basinger might say, “I like” Batdance!
The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:
- Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
- Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
- If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics
Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
