Prince – Prince (1979)

“I want to be your lover. I want to turn you on, turn you out. All night long make you shout.” For the longest time, the only familiarity I had with Prince’s self-titled second album was from the three songs (“I Wanna Be Your Lover,” “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad,” “I Feel For … Continue reading Prince – Prince (1979) →

Prince – For You (1978)

"All of this and more is for you. With love, sincerity and deepest care. My life with you I share." Prince is my favorite musician. Period. Prince and his music have been such an integral part of my life from the moment I first heard "Little Red Corvette" playing off my sister's 45 in 1983 … Continue reading Prince – For You (1978) →

#Prince is trolling some of us today. He’s finally found the answer to all the April snow but since the man loves a good practical joke, he’s definitely trolling right now and I’m here for it.
On Episode 89 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, the co-authors of The Rise of Prince: 1978-1988, Alex Hahn & @lauratiebert join me to talk about "Sign o' the Times." This lead single from the double album of the same name used a ripped from the headlines approach to calling out troubling aspects of our society while also ensuring it stayed quirky enough to be a Prince track. Its sparse production was designed to highlight the song's lyrics, so let's dig in!
On Episode 31 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, blogger Zachary Hoskins (princesongs.org) joins me to talk about the state of U.S. and Soviet Union relations in 1981, presidential assassination attempts, the Nicaraguan Sandinistas and Prince’s stab at political commentary on “Ronnie, Talk to Russia” from his Controversy album.
On Episode 30 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, author and blogger Laura Tiebert (lauratiebert.com) joins me to talk about the inspiration behind “Private Joy” as well as some of the quirkiness that can be found within the lyrics of this upbeat pop track from Prince’s Controversy album.
On Episode 29 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, I go it alone to talk through the lyrical structure of “Do Me, Baby” from his album Controversy, as basically an eight minute sexual act put to music while also dissecting Prince’s choice to play the passive role as the song’s subject.
On Episode 88 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Richard Cole from the Amari Purple Talk Podcast (AmariCommunications.com) joins me to chat about the "Kiss" B-side, "Love or Money." The song is notable as it scores the fun shopping montage scene in Under the Cherry Moon as well as winning the 1986 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Original Song (for a motion picture).
