Episode 129: Vicki Waiting

On Episode 129 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Julian Long and I attempt to make sense of a song that Prince wrote for a budding ingenue but repurposed for the Batman soundtrack, “Vicki Waiting.” We toss around ideas of what the lyrics could have been in its original incarnation and debate whether this is a Bruce Wayne song at its heart or if it’s more suitable as a Joker song. The wait is over.

“Is my character enough to be one that deserves a copy made?”

A slinky and sly mid-tempo jam where Prince comes off as both confident and insecure, sometimes in the same verse. The chorus hints at the man’s struggles with intimacy or at least commitment. At the same time, the lyrics go from prankster delivering crude jokes to make his woman smile, to excuses as to why he’s not the one, to self-doubt and struggles with his own identity as a potential father and husband. A mighty deep song for a track off a summer blockbuster soundtrack!

Vicki Waiting (Long Version)

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
