On Episode 120 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Angel Monique joined me on Valentine’s Day to talk about a song so nice, Prince released it twice, “When 2 R In Love.” This Lovesexy and Black Album ballad is designed to express a sort of closeness that only two people deeply, madly, in love can understand.
“Bathe with me. Let’s drown each other in each other’s emotions.”
A beautiful ballad that continues the themes of bathing as a metaphor for intimacy and purification commonly found in Prince’s lyrics. “When 2 R In Love” might be the most bath-centric song in a vast catalog of songs that incorporate water & bathing/showering imagery. These songs often are used for sensual effect, but one can also consider the spirituality present in the chorus. Prince’s falsetto is again used when the song calls for it, and here it encourages open and honest sharing between two people when the lyrics are sung so tenderly. Its placement on Lovesexy seems to be more apt when considering the album’s overarching themes (love & sex are beautiful within the scope of a committed relationship). Still, even on The Black Album, the song can be viewed as a respite from the partying and chaos. No matter which album you choose to listen to “When 2 R In Love,” it has a way of getting stuck in your brain and your heart.
The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:
- Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
- Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
- If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics
Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
