Episode 119: Lovesexy

On Episode 119 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Erica Thompson (APurpleDayInDecember.com) & I attempt to understand the deeper meanings behind the track “Lovesexy.” As the title track to this very spiritual yet sexy album, there must be more than meets the ear. Car metaphors, house/room/furniture double entendres, a vocal performance from Prince for the ages, and a hot take from me that might be considered blasphemous (I’m sorry!) It’s all here on this crazy-fun episode.

“With it, I know that heaven’s a butterfly kiss away.”

Let’s get crazy! Let’s get nuts! Let’s get horny for God on the title track to Prince’s Lovesexy! Easily the strangest song on the album, “Lovesexy” pulls no punches when it comes to the glorious mash-up of love, sex, and spirituality that Prince so strongly felt connected to write about on this album. The metaphors and double entendres run wild on this song, as does Prince’s choice to manipulate his voice in a manner that harkens back to Camille, but also to his character on “Bob George.” Prince decides to make love using only words but also expresses a desire to “swivel in your love seat,” so take those mixed messages however you want. There’s a powerful synth line, a gnarly psychedelic guitar break, and a massive dose of weird. I love this song all the more for it.

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
