Episode 172: The Dance Electric

On episode 172 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, I discuss the lyrics to “The Dance Electric,” a song that Prince gave his friend and former bandmate, Andre Cymone. This Purple Rain Deluxe inclusion tells us that “it’s almost time to go.” Not exactly the uplifting message for a dance track, but is there more to the song than that?

“Listen to the rhythm of your soul.”

“The Dance Electric” is one of those songs where the message contradicts the music. It’s an upbeat dance track, clocking in at over ten minutes. However, Prince spends his time sermonizing about the dangers of living a life filled with hate and anger. Specifically, this life of hate and anger may prevent that person from seeing the wonders of Heaven. The Dance Electric appears to be a celebratory dance in honor of life and God.

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
