Episode 170: Love & Sex (’84)

On episode 170 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, I am joined by new guest, CydneeC, to chat about the 1984 recording of “Love & Sex,” not to be confused with another unrelated song with the same title recorded a couple of years later. Prince wants to get freaky in the Upper Room. Will God allow it?

“Come on, baby, hurt me in the Upper Room.”

The kind of hurt that Prince refers to in this Linn-drum-heavy, early Minneapolis-sound vault track is not the kind of hurt that (likely) scars or sends folks to the hospital. Prince wants to know if sex is allowed in Heaven, and he hopes God will provide some answers before he leaves this mortal plane. He and his baby have a rocky relationship, and he must know if they can kiss and make up once they both die. How about some answers?

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
