Episode 168: Electric Intercourse

On episode 168 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, I’m joined by Kevin Evans to chat about the emotionally charged ballad that almost made it into the Purple Rain film, “Electric Intercourse.” Did Prince make the right choice to write and record a new song for this slot in the movie? Let’s discuss how the lyrics give us insight into the right choice.

“Your Technicolor climax is at my fingertips.”

The big emotional ballad slot in Purple Rain was ultimately given to “The Beautiful Ones,” but what if “Electric Intercourse” was ultimately the song used in its place? The song is a beautiful piano and synth-heavy track with a Linn-LM1 drum machine backing the music and Prince’s vocals. Prince wants to make love with a woman he doesn’t even know the name of. Sounds like true love to me, right?

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
