On episode 147 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Micah Simpson from the Purple Underground YouTube Channel joins me in discussing the Dirty Mind/Controversy era vault track, “She’s Just a Baby.” We discuss who is the often-cited inspiration for this song as well as carefully navigate the age gap issue that this song addresses.

The lyrics about an older man in love with a younger woman can sometimes be a bit cringe-worthy, but overall, this simple, slow song is beautiful, soulful, and worth a listen. Prince sounds very sincere in the performance, as his relationship with then-teenager Susan Moonsie likely inspired the song’s content. Susan would later become a member of Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6. A shorter but cleaned-up re-do of version 1; this version sounds more like it was ready for inclusion on an album. Unfortunately and inexplicably, the cleaned-up version begins fading out during the second verse.
The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:
- Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
- Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
- If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics
Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
