Episode 126: Electric Chair

On Episode 126 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Karen Shedrick returns to the show to chat with me about the sexy, dangerous, and rockin’ “Electric Chair.” This Batman track gets into some sci-fi thought police territory as a song about the sin of lustful thoughts. Plus, it’s sung from the perspective of the Joker, so there’s a whole extra dynamic at play. Absolve your guilt with us and check out the episode.

“If a man is considered guilty for what goes on in his mind, then give me the electric chair for all my future crimes.”

The sinful thoughts that go on in Prince’s mind take precedence on this funk-rock track with origins dating back to the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic project that Prince was working on in 1988. A song repurposed for Batman, Prince applies the criminal aspects of the Joker’s backstory to tell the tale of a man consumed by lust for a beautiful woman he sees while out on the town one night. Lock him up, throw away the key and let your imagination run wild with whatever thoughts that Prince must have going on in his mind that would warrant capital punishment. Whatever you do, keep rockin’ on!

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
