Episode 122: Positivity

On Episode 122 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Dr. Tara Betts joins the podcast for the first time to chat with me about the final track from Lovesexy, “Positivity.” This ode to the power of positive thinking can thwart the creepy-crawly Spooky Electric, uplift those living with poverty & bleak situations while lifting us with a gospel chant. Have you had your plus sign today?

“Do we mark you present, or do we mark you late?”

I asked a podcast listener via the Press Rewind Discord, @hausoftheo, to summarize “Positivity” for me as he has an excellent way of succinctly breaking a song down that works well for podcast notes. Here’s what was provided – in a similar vein as songs like “Paisley Park” and “The Ladder” from Around the World in a Day, “Positivity” is Lovesexy’s “call to action.” This call to action is, in essence, the pursuit of finding Lovesexy, which is, in Prince’s views, the ultimate relationship with God.

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
