On Episode 104 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, fellow Ohio resident Scott Woods joins me to “rap” about “Adore,” the grand finale for the Sign o’ the Times album. Prince mostly (with a couple of notable exceptions) remains sincere and genuine throughout this mature ballad, a throwback to classic soul.
“Until the end of time, I’ll be there for you. You own my heart and mind. I truly adore you.”
“Adore” is arguably the greatest love song that Prince has ever recorded. It perfectly embodies feelings of love, trust, commitment, devotion, and any other words you want to throw at it to describe a feeling of true happiness with another human being. So much of what he does here is a nod to his youth’s great “quiet storm” ballads while injecting humor and modern touches to keep the song out of the parody realm. You shouldn’t be surprised if you hear this song played at weddings, commitment ceremonies, and dances. It is a cultural monument that has stood the test of time.
The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:
- Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
- Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
- If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics
Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
