Episode 96: Hot Thing

On Episode 96 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, I’m joined by Prince scholar, author, and #PrinceTwitterThread co-founder, Edgar Kruize, to discuss Sign o’ the Times’ “Hot Thing.” Edgar and I overanalyze the hell out of what is primarily just a thumping dance track with a slammin’ beat and great Prince screams.

“Are your smiles, are your smiles for me?”

He sees you, sees you dancing. He makes sure you see him too. The beat thumps, the horns pump, and the night extends beyond the four walls of the club. He sweeps you off your feet, out into the night, and on to the Crystal Ball. No one knows precisely what happens at the Crystal Ball, but I assume that it’s quite erotic. The hot thing stands there waiting, dancing, oblivious yet still aware of her power.

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
