Episode 84: Do U Lie?

On Episode 84 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, Karen Shedrick joins me again to discuss the lyrics to one of the essential tracks for the Under the Cherry Moon Soundtrack, primarily due to its prominence in the film. We try to capture the song’s intent in the context of the movie while also looking at the lyrics as having a dual purpose.

“I wear a frown because you’re uptown. Going down, going down, going down.”

One of the most Under the Cherry Moon sounding songs on the entire Parade album is a whimsical yet accusatory track. It perfectly mirrors the deception that makes up one of the central themes of the film, and for that reason, makes this a much more compelling soundtrack song than, say, “Kiss.”

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!
